The Coldridge families of Devon
This web site explores the history and genealogy of the COLDRIDGE, COLERIDGE and COLRIDGE families of Devon and their descendants. In parish records of the 1600s these surnames are mainly found in the area around Drewsteignton, Dunsford and Exeter, and so it seems likely that they originated in this part of Devon.
Records for each family are presented chronologically to provide more narrative than could be included in a family tree alone. My research so far has identified around 90% of the COLDRIDGE, COLERIDGE and COLRIDGE families in the records up to 1911, and I have noted any assumptions made where records are ambiguous or incomplete. This is still a work in progress so comments and corrections are welcome.
Organisation of the family records
The families are grouped according to their geographical associations in the records of the early 1800s, not according to surname since this is not consistently transcribed:
COLDRIDGE is associated with Doddiscombsleigh, Dunsford and Exeter.
COLRIDGE is associated with North Bovey, Chagford and Moretonhampstead.
COLERIDGE is associated with West Teignmouth, Exeter and Ottery St Mary.
For each family group, there is a family tree which provides links to the records for each family. The details for each family are presented chronologically to provide more narrative than can be included in a family tree alone.
My research so far has identified around 90% of the COLDRIDGE, COLRIDGE and COLERIDGE families in the records up to 1911, and around 50% of the later records. I have noted any assumptions made and inferences drawn from incomplete or ambiguous records. This is still a work in progress so comments, corrections and additions are all welcome.
Details of these groups of families can be found by following the links on the menu bar. More information about the geographical distribution of surnames can be found in COLDRIDGE, COLERIDGE and COLRIDGE surnames in Devon records.
Sources of information
The primary sources of information are parish registers, BMD and census records available online. Most of the transcripts have been checked against a scanned image of the original document to verify their accuracy. Supporting information was obtained from probate summaries, newspaper archives and material provided by a few individual contributors.
UK parish registers from 1700 to 1837 and BMD indexes from 1837 to about 1990.
UK censuses from 1841 to 1911.
UK probate summaries from 1860 to about 1970.
Canada BMD records from 1850 to 1930 and censuses from 1851 to 1921.
US BMD records and censuses from 1900 to 1940.
New Zealand BMD records from 1875 to around 1950.
Newspaper archives from the UK, Canada, India, South Africa and New Zealand.
Links to many of the online sources can be found in Acknowledgments.
This web site began as an exercise in tracing my own COLDRIDGE family's roots back to the village of Doddiscombsleigh and grew into an exploration of the COLDRIDGE surname and its origins in Devon. Along the way I discovered that most of the COLDRIDGE families in the records of the 1800s have their roots in Doddiscombsleigh, and the remainder can be traced back to Dunsford, a few miles to the north. In disentangling the COLERIDGE and COLRIDGE families I came to realise that all three surnames probably originated in a relatively small area to the north-east of Dartmoor in Devon.
In 1900 J.T.H. Du Boulay researched a branch of the Exeter Coleridge families and produced a family tree, a transcript of which can be found at Du Boulay's Coleridge of Devon.
