Walter & Emily Coleridge of Bombay

Walter COLERIDGE, born in Exeter in 1819, is the ninth son of John & Elizabeth COLDRIDGE. He married Emily in Bombay and they had 5 daughters.

According to J T H Du Boulay's "Coleridge in Devon" document, Walter became a colonel in H.E.I.C.S., leading to my discovery of the following marriage record and accompanying notice in the Bombay Times on 5th August 1848:

At Aden on Tuesday the 26th July … Walter COLERIDGE Lieut 20th regt MNI to Emily Howard, youngest daughter of William ROLPH esq of Thornbury Gloucestershire.

Walter COLERIDGE, age 29, bachelor, Lieut 20th regt MNI, son of John COLERIDGE, married Emily Howard ROLPH, age 25, spinster, daughter of William ROLPH, on the Feast of St James 25th July 1848 at Aden Church, Bombay, by licence.

Julia Frances Shapland COLERIDGE's baptism was recorded on 8th November 1849 in Aden, Bombay, and her date of birth is given as 26th July 1849.

Emily Josephine Sarah COLERIDGE's baptism was recorded on 22nd February 1851 in Madras, and her date of birth is given as 22nd August 1850.

Amy Rolph COLERIDGE's birth was registered in March 1853 in St Thomas.

Frances Elizabeth Senior COLERIDGE's birth was registered in March 1854 in St Thomas.

The following notice appeared in the Bombay Times on 20th January 1852:

At Ootacamund on the 9th Jan the wife of Lieut Coleridge 20th Regt MNI of a son still-born.

In 1871 Emily is widowed and living in Littleham with 4 of her daughters. Emily has already married and left home. Edith's birthplace is given as as Wurtemburg, Stuttgart.

A notice of Walter's death appeared in the Exeter & Plymouth Gazette on Friday 15th January 1864:

COLDRIDGE. Jan. 5, at Heidelberg, Baden, Major Walter COLERIDGE, late 20th Regt., Madras Native Infantry, aged 44.

Probate 6 April 1864. The Will with a Codicil of Walter COLERIDGE formerly of East Budleigh in the County of Devon but late of Heidelberg in Germany a Retired Major from the 20th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry deceased who died 5 January 1864 at Heidelberg aforesaid was proved at the principal Registry by the oaths of Samuel Taylor COLERIDGE of East Budleigh aforesaid Gentleman the Brother the Reverend Samuel Powning COLERIDGE of Otterton in the County aforesaid Clerk the Nephew and Edward Hunt ROBERTS of the City of Exeter Solicitor the Executors.
