John & Elizabeth Coldridge of Exeter

John COLDRIDGE, born in Doddiscombsleigh in 1777, is the elder of the surviving sons of Richard & Anne COLDRIDGE. He married Elizabeth when he was 21 and lived in Exeter where they had 12 children – 9 sons and 3 daughters.

John COLDRIDGE of the parish of St Thomas the Apostle married Elizabeth HOLLETT on 26th March 1799 in Withycombe Raleigh. Witnesses Elizth. HUTTON and Nathaniel HAYMAN.

In 1841 John & Elizabeth are recorded in Exeter with Theodore, one of their younger sons.

The following notice appeared in the Reading Mercury on Saturday 29th April 1843:

PREFERMENTS. The Rev.Theodore COLDRIDGE, M.A., late Curate of St. Sidwell's, to the Rectory of Allhallows, Goldsmith-street, Exeter, vacant by the resignation of the Rev. M. Vicars.

There was a notice of John's death in the Western Times on Saturday 15th February 1845:

Feb. 9, at Salutary Mount, Heavitree, aged 67, Mr. John COLDRIDGE, late of Exeter, land agent.

John COLDRIDGE's death, aged 77, was registered in March 1845 in St Thomas. A probate record of the same year refers to the will of John COLDRIDGE, land surveyor, of Exeter.

The following appeared in the Western Times, Exeter on Saturday 12th May 1849:

…He would therefore propose that the best thanks of this corporation are eminently due and are hereby presented to the Rev. Theodore COLERIDGE for the zeal, kindness, and attention with which he has discharged his important duties during the six years he has filled the office of Chaplain to the Workhouse.

Theodore's death was reported in the Western Times on Saturday 5th April 1851:

March 30, the Rev. Theodore COLDRIDGE, Rector of All-hallows, Goldsmith-street, in this city, aged 35 years.

Theodore COLDRIDGE's death, aged 35, was registered in June 1851 in Exeter. A probate record of the same year refers to the will of Theodore COLDRIDGE of Exeter.

In 1851 Elizabeth is widowed and living in Exeter with her children and grandson. The household is recorded as COLERIDGE.

Elizabeth COLERIDGE's death was registered in December 1857 in Exeter. An obituary notice in the Exeter & Plymouth Gazette records her death on 6th October 1857 at East Budleigh, aged 77.

17 June 1858. The Will of Elizabeth COLDRIDGE late of Syon House East Budleigh in the County of Devon Widow deceased who died 6 October 1857 at East Budleigh aforesaid was proved at Exeter by the oaths of Samuel Taylor COLDRIDGE of Syon House aforesaid Gentleman the Son and the Reverend Samuel Powning COLDRIDGE of Otterton in the said County Clerk the Grandson the Executors. Effects under £1,000.
