Henry & Emma Coldridge of Bicton

Henry COLDRIDGE, born in 1842, is the eldest son of George & Sarah COLDRIDGE of Dunsford. He had 9 children – 6 sons and 3 daughters - whose births are recorded in Dunsford, Launceston, Dunchideock and East Budleigh, presumably due to his work as a gamekeeper. Henry later became an agricultural labourer and settled in Tedburn St Mary.

Henry COLDRIDGE, bachelor, servant, son of George COLDRIDGE, farmer & Emma MORRISH, spinster, servant, daughter of William MORRISH, tailor – Marriage 26th September 1865 in the Parish Church of Holcombe Burnell after banns. Both of full age and sojourners in the parish. Henry made his mark, Emma signed. Witnesses George MORRISH and Mary MORRISH.

In 1871 Henry & Emma are recorded as COLERIDGE in East Budleigh with 3 of their children all of whom have different birthplaces. In the same census, Henry's parents in Dunsford are looking after John Walter COLDRIDGE, aged 3, who is probably Henry & Emma's son too.

Alfred COLDRIDGE – Birth registration September (Q3) 1866 in St Thomas. The 1871 census gives his birthplace as Dunsford.

Henry COLDRIDGE – Birth registration June (Q2) 1868 in Launceston, Cornwall (only 3 months after John Walter's birth registration). The 1871 census confirms his birthplace.

Walter COLDRIDGE – Birth registration September (Q3) 1870 in St Thomas. The 1871 census gives his birthplace as Dunchideock.

In 1891 Henry & Emma have moved to Tedburn St Mary, Emma's birthplace. Their daughter Lucy is still living in Bicton, their son Walter is working as a gamekeeper in Heavitree and their daughter Ada is housemaid to a member of parliament.

William Albert COLDRIDGE & Lily POOK – Marriage registration September (Q3) 1916 in St Thomas. No records of any children have been found.

The following notice appeared in the Western Times, Exeter on Friday 3rd May 1918:

News has been received that Pte. W. COLDRIDGE, of Tedburn St. Mary, has been killed in action in France. His widow has received a letter from one of the officers of the Royal West Kent Regt., in which he says: "We shall miss him very much. He was one of our best Lewis Gunners, and was always cheerful in adverse circumstances." Pte. COLDRIDGE was well known and respected in Tedburn St. Mary, and great sympathy is expressed towards his widow, and his aged father, at North Park.

Private William Albert COLDRIDGE of the 6th Battalion Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, resident of Dunsford, was killed in action, aged 43, on 9th April 1918, France & Flanders. Commemorated at Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

Lily COLDRIDGE – Death registration September (Q3) 1964 in Exeter, aged 88.

Lily COLDRIDGE of 35 Cleveland Street Exeter widow died 22 July 1964 Probate Exeter 31 August 1964 to Frank SYMONS solicitor. £5771.
