William COLDRIDGE, born in Exeter in 1868, is the third son of Charles & Amelia COLDRIDGE. He joined the 5th Lancers at the age of 22, served in South Africa and Flanders, and reached the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major. He married Hilda in York when he was 41 and they had 1 daughter.

William Densley COLDRIDGE's enlistment at the age of 22 in the 5th Lancers for General Service (Cavalry) was recorded at Canterbury on 12th November 1890.

Quartermaster Sergeant W. D. COLDRIDGE appears on the 5th Royal Irish Lancers Roll of Individuals entitled to the South Africa Medal and Clasps signed at Naamspoort on 10th April 1902. [shortly before the end of the 2nd Boer War]

The following notice appeared in the Luton Reporter on Monday 1st June 1914:

ON THE SUSSEX DOWNS. The Beds. Yeomanry are more strongly represented than in previous years, there being twenty officers as well as 434 N.C.O's and men. … Regimental Sergt.-Major W. D. COLDRIDGE is a worthy successor to R.S.M. ELLIOTT, who for twelve years was at the head of the permanent staff.

William Densley COLDRIDGE's death was recorded on 21st July 1918, when he was an R.S.M. in the 1st Bedfordshire Yeomanry in France and Flanders. His residence is given as York and his birthplace Exeter St Sidwell. The record states "died", not "killed in action", so he may have been a victim of the 1918 flu pandemic.
