William & Harriet Coldridge of Doddiscombsleigh

William COLDRIDGE, born in Doddiscombsleigh in 1812, is the second son of John & Betsey COLDRIDGE and worked as a farmer in Doddiscombsleigh all his life. His marriage took some finding:

William ALDRIDGE's marriage at the age of 44 to Harriett JERVIS was registered in March 1857 in St Thomas.

The censuses give Harriet's birthplace as Tedburn St Mary, a few miles north of Dunsford. They married relatively late and appear to have had no children.

In 1861 William is married and living on the 50 acre Pitt Farm leaving younger brother Joseph to manage Holmbush. William's mother Betsey has left Holmbush to live with them but she died less than a year after the census.

Elizabeth COLDRIDGE's death, aged 73, was registered in March 1862 in St Thomas. The Doddiscombsleigh parish register records her burial on 30th March 1862.

The Will of Betsey COLERIDGE late of the Parish of Doddiscombsleigh in the County of Devon Widow deceased who died 25 March 1862 at Doddiscombsleigh aforesaid was proved at Exeter by the oath of Amelia Emma WRIGHT (Wife of Elon WRIGHT, Farmer) of Doddiscombsleigh aforesaid the Daughter and the sole Executrix. By 1891 Harriet, recently widowed, is living in Exeter with her younger sister Martha. John Norrish SERCOMBE's marriage to Martha JERVIS was registered in January 1852 in Doddiscombsleigh. In the census John and Martha both give their birthplace as Dunsford, but their children were born in Doddiscombsleigh.

William COLDRIDGE's death, aged 77, was registered in March 1891 in St Thomas. The Doddiscombsleigh parish register records his burial on 7th February 1891 giving his residence as Burnthouse.
