The following article appeared in the Western Times, Exeter on 15th June 1894:
Mr Sidney Hacker, County Coroner, on Monday at North Bovey held an inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Susan COLRIDGE, single, aged 47. The body was identified by John COLRIDGE, carpenter, as that of his sister. Mrs FICE, of The Mills, North Bovey said that on Saturday … she went to the house of the deceased … and on returning about ten minutes later found the place in darkness and heard a gurgling sound. On running out she met Frank COLRIDGE, whom she asked to get some matches, as she thought there was something wrong. They… found deceased at the bottom of the stairs with her legs upwards, her head on the floor in a pool of blood. The candle and candlestick were lying there also. The doctor was fetched, but when he came she was dead… Her collar was tight, and she appeared to have fallen in such a way as to cause the tightness to strangle her, and the blood had burst a vessel. – Verdict "Accidental death by strangulation."
